“My sometimes friend, sometimes enemy, all the time pain in the ass.”

― Karen ChanceHunt the Moon

Finally I am getting around to doing my first book review.

This one is more a series (or two) rather than just one book but I didn’t want to just single out one of the books.

The series’ I’ll be writing about are by Karen Chance and they are the Cassie Palmer and Dorina Basarab series. I’m doing the two together as they are set in the same world and even share characters.

Until recently I had only read the two series separately but recently I re-read them and put them in the proper timeline.  So I am going to treat the two series as one as they slot in with each other.

I just want to put out there that I am no good at descriptions and a simple google search will give you a synopsis of the books. So I thought I would try doing this differently.

Top 3 Characters

  1. Dorina Basarab: one of the two main leading ladies. Dory is a Dhampir (half vampire half human) who also happens to be the niece of Dracula. We see her struggle with the fact she thinks she is crazy as well as her struggle to connect with her vampire family when she doesn’t feel like she belongs there. She is truly a kick ass character and I love her for it.
  2. Mircea Basarab: Dory’s vampire dad. Mircea is shown as a sexy and mysterious man. He is the main linking character between the two series’. Throughout all the books we slowly learn more about who he is and what has happened in his past and it just makes him more of a puzzle.
  3. Cassie Palmer: the second leading lady. Cassie is a clairvoyant who inherits the powers of Pythia. The first few books show her rejecting this power and fighting to keep her independence then when she finally accepts her new role she is even more determined to show people that she doesn’t need protecting. Her fight for independence is even more complicated when she practically becomes the wife of Mircea through some vampire tradition.

 Top 3 Moments

  1. Cassie accusing Mircea of having another girlfriend after finding an album full of photos he has of Dory over the years. Neither women knows about the other and I can’t wait to see either of their reactions when they find out.
  2. When Mircea gives Dory a book with drawings of her mother in it. He recently revealed to her that he erased all her memories that may involve her mother and that is the only way he has to give her back something of her mother. It is the start of some beautiful and dysfunctional father daughter moments between the two.
  3. Cassie and Mircea’s trip to find Merlin’s magic book and discovering that Merlin may be somebody they already know. Honestly I’m not going to go into this one further because I don’t know how to without spoiling some major plot points.

Top 3 Books

Cassie Palmer – Embrace the night

Recently named the world’s chief clairvoyant, Cassandra Palmer still has a thorn in her side. As long as Cassie and a certain master vampire—the sizzling-hot Mircea—are magically bound to each other, her life will never be her own …
The spell that binds them can only be broken with an incantation found in the Codex Merlini, an ancient grimoire. The Codex’s location has been lost in the present day, so Cassie will have to seek it out in the only place it can still be found—the past.
But Cassie soon realizes the Codex has been lost for a reason. The book is rumored to contain some seriously dangerous spells, and retrieving it may help Cassie to deal with Mircea, but it could also endanger the world…

Dorinda Basarab – Midnights Daughter

Dorina Basarab is a dhampir—half-human, half-vampire. Subject to uncontrollable rages, most dhampirs live very short, very violent lives. So far, Dory has managed to maintain her sanity by unleashing her anger on those demons and vampires who deserve killing.
Now Dory’s vampire father has come back into her life. Her uncle Dracula (yes, theDracula) infamous even among vampires for his cruelty and murderous ways, has escaped his prison. And her father wants Dory to work with the gorgeous master vampire Louis-Cesare to put him back there.
Vampires and dhampirs are mortal enemies, and Dory prefers to work alone. But Dracula is the only thing on earth that truly scares her, and when Dory has to go up against him, she’ll take all the help she can get…

Dorinda Basarab – Fury’s Kiss

Dorina Basarab is a dhampir—half-human, half-vampire. Subject to uncontrollable rages, most dhampirs live very short, very violent lives. But so far, Dory has managed to maintain her sanity by unleashing her anger on those demons and vampires who deserve killing...
Dory is used to fighting hard and nasty. So when she wakes up in a strange scientific lab with a strange man standing over her, her first instinct is to take his head off. Luckily, the man is actually the master vampire Louis-Cesare, so he’s not an easy kill.
It turns out that Dory had been working with a Vampire Senate task force on the smuggling of magical items and weaponry out of Faerie when she was captured and brought to the lab. But when Louis-Cesare rescues her, she has no memory of what happened to her.
To find out what was done to her—and who is behind it—Dory will have to face off with fallen angels, the maddest of mad scientists, and a new breed of vampires that are far worse than undead…
