Hair Care │Dry/Over-processed Hair

As I said in my hair cut post I’ve had very dry and over processed hair for about a year now so I thought I would share some of the things I’ve learnt to do in order to help my hair look healthy and eventually be healthy.

Prewash

Hair oils:

I like to use hair oils like coconut oil in my hair the night before I know I’m going to be washing my hair. I cover my hair in oil and then put it in a messy bun (you can cover your hair with something like a shower cap but I can’t sleep like this).

Washing

Shampoo/conditioner:

I like to use nourishing products to wash my hair like the dove oil care range once every week and alternate that with a product to protect the colour in my hair especially since I use auburn/brunette dyes so they fade really quickly.

Clarifying shampoos:

Along with the above products I like to use a clarifying shampoo once a week so that I can give my hair a fresh start and rid it of any build up. I usually use this when I wash my hair after using an oil to make sure that the oil is out of my hair.

 Hair Masks:

When I use the clarifying shampoo I like to follow up with a hair mask to fully condition my hair. I usually leave these on for around half an hour but if I feel that my hair needs a major moisture boost I leave it on for a few hours (it can be left on overnight but as I said I hate sleeping with my hair covered). I usually use the ones that are designed for dry or coloured hair.

Styling

Brushes:

Brushing is a major cause of broken hair so using brushes that are meant to be easy on your hair are a life saver for me and it’s a real bonus that they make it so much easier to manage my thick and tangled hair.

 Leave-in treatments:

This is a step that I never used to need when my hair was normal but as it got dryer it became harder to de tangle without a leave in conditioner so I now swear by this step. Leave in oils are also really great for the ends of your hair and they also help if you use heat to dry your hair as these will speed up the process and limit the time needed to dry.

 Heat protection:

This final thing is critical for every hair type if you use heat and it’s something a lot of beauty bloggers mention and since its self-explanatory I won’t go into detail but it is a step that again (mostly due to laziness) I used to miss out but when my hair was at its driest I literally couldn’t go near heat tools without it been frazzled so heat protections became my saviour for drying my hair and eventually I was able to use heat on my hair as long as I added a heat protection.
